Video Content for Halloween – 2014 statistics show 40% increase

Halloween is an event that should be in the books for any video marketer. There is a tremendous window of opportunity when it comes to brands that want to reach out to potential customers. And, with a bit of inspiration video specialists can create unique engaging content for a wide part of their audience.

We know that Halloween is popular on YouTube, but what are the figures to support this fact? If we take into account stats provided by Tubular, there’s a 40% increase over last year. October 27 was a date that marked a record when it came to views of Halloween-themed videos:

– 24.2 million views is not a number to joke about.

–  Compared to 2013, there was an extra 6.9 million viewers interested in Halloween-related video content.

There are about 80K YouTube channels that feature Halloween content:

– Out of those, just a mere 1,672 are actually owned by brands.

– 18K of these accounts are of influencers, while the remaining 61K are owned by fans.

It’s clear there’s a real demand for Halloween content, but what makes brands stay away from this growing trend? Check out the 2014 stats:

Between September 27 and October 27:

– A bit over 100 thousand Halloween-related videos were uploaded on YouTube and together, they amassed 241 million views.

– Most of them, 15K, are gaming-related, being closely followed by entertainment videos and How-to videos.

– Women aged 18-24 make up most of the audience for these videos, with 29% of the total number of views.

– The 1,673 brand channels that we mentioned before represent just 1.3% of content creators.

One of last month’s more popular videos came from Ikea(Singapore), having over 4 million views, 7,200 tweets and 33K shares on Facebook. Indeed, through this homage to Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’, Ikea shows that brands can do great content without any cheesy stereotypes.

What’s the recipe for the best YouTube Halloween video?

It seems that Halloween themed branded content lacked from YouTube this year. On the other hand, you could say brands have 11 more months to prepare for the 2015 Halloween event. :) Checking this year’s AudienceGraph published by Tubular might be a great start.

When it came to the keyword Halloween, the following categories generated this average amount of views per video:

  1. How-to videos are at the top, with an average of 18K views per video.
  2. Second place is far behind, where educational videos are featured with 12K views per video.
  3. Comedy videos take third place at 10K views per video.
  4. Entertainment, People, Music, Travel and Gaming each have under 9.5K views per video.
